After watching just one video of Mariposa there was no doubt that she was the new image of the contemporary poetry. Even know we were born and still living in Puerto Rico some of her poems gave us nostalgia when it brings us back our childhood memories with our family. Her poems made us feel a connection between us and her. When we were listening to her poems during our research we could feel our hearts beating faster and getting Goosebumps every time she began describing how amazing Puerto Rico is and finishing how proud she was about it. Puerto Rican poet and performance artist Mariposa María Teresa Fernández was born and raised in the Bronx. The first in her family to graduate from college, she earned a BA and an MA at New York University. In her poems, which often combine Spanish and English lines, Mariposa explore themes of empowerment, family, and identity. Her work has been featured on the HBO series Habla Ya! and in the HBO documentary Americanos: Latino Life in the United States. Mariposa has performed her poetry at the United Nations World Conference Against Racism and she is also founder of Poetry for Entrepreneurs.
